This creamy homemade ravioli sauce combines the rich flavors of sautéed onions, garlic, crushed tomatoes, and heavy cream with a hint of Italian seasoning and parmesan cheese. Perfectly paired with your favorite ravioli or pasta, this sauce is easy to prepare on the stovetop and delivers a luscious, comforting Italian-style meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For Serving:

  • Fresh parsley for garnish
  • Cooked ravioli or pasta of choice

Instructions

  1. Sauté onion: Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add garlic: Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 1 minute more, stirring frequently to prevent burning and to release the garlic’s aroma.
  3. Add crushed tomatoes and seasoning: Stir in the 15-ounce can of crushed tomatoes along with 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook uncovered for 10 minutes to meld flavors and reduce slightly.
  4. Incorporate cream and parmesan: Reduce the heat to low, then stir in 1/2 cup of heavy cream and 1/4 cup of grated parmesan cheese. Continue to simmer gently for an additional 5 minutes until the sauce is creamy and well blended.
  5. Season to taste: Add salt and freshly ground black pepper according to your preference, stirring well to distribute the seasoning.
  6. Toss with pasta and garnish: Pour the finished sauce over cooked ravioli or your pasta of choice and toss gently to coat evenly. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving for a fresh, vibrant finish.

Notes

  • This sauce can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, reheat gently before serving.
  • For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half or milk for heavy cream, though the sauce will be less rich.
  • Add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick if desired.
  • Use freshly grated parmesan for best flavor and texture.
  • Gluten-free ravioli or pasta can be used to accommodate dietary restrictions.
